About Us

Red Balloon of the Air (RBAir) is part of Red Balloon Educational Trust (RBET) and is based in Milton, Cambridge. RBAir is a special educational provision offering a hybrid of online and face-to-face support to learners aged 11 (Y7) – 20 (last admission at age 18). We welcomed our first learners in 2011 and since that time we have supported many young people to re-engage with their education, and achieve qualifications alongside, building up confidence in their social skills and improving their wellbeing.

A learner and Link Mentor stand with their backs to the camera, looking at animals at a local zoo. The learner's head is turned to the side and they are smiling.

Learners are taught online through live, interactive sessions, either individually or as part of a small group.  Red Balloon of the Air offers a variety of approaches to learning through project-based sessions and/or subject-based lessons that lead to the achievement of a wide range of qualification options including GCSEs, Functional Skills and ASDAN courses. In addition, learners can achieve AQA Unit Awards in a wide range of subjects.

All learners receive vital regular support from a Link Mentor; this is delivered through a flexible pastoral model, the opportunity to meet peers for social activity sessions and the offer of access to therapy sessions from a qualified therapist. This holistic package supports the learner to gradually increase their confidence in all areas of life.

Over the last few years, Red Balloon Educational Trust (RBET) has developed a learning hub in Danbury, Essex, which works in partnership with RBAir (for further information on RBET’s Learning Hub, please click here). Both RBAir’s Centre in Milton,  Cambridge, and RBET’s Learning Hub in Danbury, Essex, offer a purposefully different experience of an education and learning environment than traditional mainstream schools; they are smaller in size and are set up less formally. Both are JCQ registered exam centres; as such, learners can sit all their exams in a space which feels familiar and reassuring. Additionally, we have our own Level 7 Assessor to ensure that all examination access arrangements are in place. Our learners are supported by their Link Mentors to become familiar with these exam spaces before the exam season begins.

All our staff are highly trained professionals who are dedicated to improving the lives of young people by helping them to re-engage, offering a sense of belonging and treating them with unconditional positive regard.
